General Information

You have to be at least 20 years of age and present a valid drivers license.

While there’s no definitive answer, we suggest spending 3-10 days in a camper van to explore the Faroe Islands.

With just 3 days, you might not want to prioritize visiting Sandoy and Suðuroy islands connected by ferry, but you can still enjoy some of the main highlights.

However, with 10 days or even two weeks, you can comfortably cover most of the Faroe Islands at your own pace.

There are roughly 20 camping sites in the Faroe Islands that offer restrooms and showers. Find a complete overview on www.camping.fo. and read this booklet for more information on camping sites,

Pricing is generally very reasonable, charging either the vehicle per night or person per night. Some of the sites offer online booking while for others a phone call or email will do. If hesitant, give the camping site a ring.

This is also a great way to meet new people – locals and visitors alike – and perhaps get some good tips from fellow travelers.

Please note that camping is only permitted in designated camping areas. Camping outside designated camping sites is illegal and can result in fines.

Parking is free in the Faroe Islands on public parking spots, just be mindful of potential time limits to avoid tickets. Look for a blue sign at the parking spot that indicates the allowed parking time and set the timer on the disc located on the front window of the passenger side to the time of parking.

Restrooms are readily available throughout the islands, including at camping sites, gas stations, cafes, restaurants, and other locations. For showers, we suggest using those found at camping sites or local swimming pools.

Yes, we require a minimum rental period of 3 days for our camper vans.

No, we don’t charge for mileage.

We request that our campers be returned with a full fuel tank, as they are provided fully fueled. If fuel is missing upon return, we will charge for the cost of the missing fuel in addition to a €20 service fee.

No, all charges will be clearly defined and outlined during the checkout process.

We charge a non-refundable booking deposit of either €300 or 25% of the total rental charge, depending on which sum is greater. The outstanding balance of the rental charge is due for payment upon collection of the camper van.

Similarly, when you pick up the camper van, a refundable security deposit of €500 is collected. This deposit functions as a protective measure to cover potential damages, traffic fines, parking violations, tunnel fees, and any other costs incurred during the Rental Period. The security deposit is refunded upon safe and satisfactory return of the Vehicle at the end of the rental period.

In our Terms and Conditions we outline the penalty charges collected in case of negligent behavior or illegal activities.

The booking deposit, amounting to either €300 or 25% of the total rental charge (whichever is greater), is charged to confirm your booking. It is applied towards the total rental cost. The outstanding balance of the rental charge is due for payment upon collection of the camper van.

A refundable security deposit of €500 is collected when picking up the camper van. This deposit functions as a protective measure to cover potential damages to the vehicle, traffic fines, parking violations, tunnel fees, and any other costs incurred during the rental period. Yes, €10/day for an extra driver.

The Faroe Islands are interconnected by four underwater tunnels:

  • Vágatunnilin
  • Norðoyatunnilin
  • Eysturoyartunnilin
  • Sandoyartunnilin

Our customers are charged DKK 100 (approximately €13.5) for a round trip through the Vágatunnel and Norðoyatunnel, paid upon the return of the vehicle.

To simplify the process, we highly recommend that our customers purchase the tunnel pass as an add-on for €10 per rental day. This pass grants free and unlimited access to these tunnels.

Please note that the Eysturoyartunnilin and Sandoyartunnilin are not covered by our subsea tunnel pass due to the higher cost. With regards to Eysturoyartunnilin there is a free alternative route that adds about 20-30 minutes of driving time.

Should you choose to drive through the Eysturoyartunnel or Sandoyartunnel in a camper van, the cost is DKK 250 each way (approximately €34).

All our vehicles come with basic insurance coverage, which includes damage and liability protection. However, you will be subject to a personal liability (self-risk) of €1500 per incident unless you add-on additional insurance.

To avoid the risk of personal liability, we highly recommend purchasing the premium self-risk assurance as an add-on to your booking which takes your personal liability to zero. This will provide you with full coverage and peace of mind during your rental period.

For those seeking a balanced option, we also offer a Basic Plus+ Insurance which halves your personal liability from €1500 to €750.

The booking deposit, amounting to either €300 or 25% of the total rental charge (whichever is greater), is non-refundable. Reservations may be rescheduled without incurring additional fees, provided that this change is requested no less than 48 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up date. Please note, however, that rescheduling is subject to the availability of our vehicles. Given the size of our fleet, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate rescheduling requests, but we assure you that we will make every effort to do so.

For cancellation and rescheduling queries, please send an email to info@campervans.fo

Pickup and drop-off is at Vágar airport or at our office location in the capital city of Tórshavn, a 40min drive from the airport. However, there is a €60 fee for pickup and/or drop-off at the airport.

General pickup and drop-off hours are from 7:00 am to 20:00 pm every day, but we are flexible in case you need to pick up or drop off your camper outside these hours. Please reach out to well in advance should you require pickup and drop-off outside opening hours.

The office address is:

Slættanesgøta 11
100 Tórshavn
Faroe Islands

Vágar Airport is reasonably well connected by bus and taxi to Tórshavn. The options are:

  • Cheapest: Public Bus (Route 300) – check the schedule on ssl.fo or on this link
  • Preferred: Shared taxi that will drop you off at our office for pick-up  –  book in advance by calling +2983112345 or fill out the form on auto.fo/airport
  • Expensive: Private taxi – same provider as above
  • Free: Hitchhiking

We recommend taking the bus – it’s free anyway.

You can also take a walk of about 2.5km or ~25min from town (uphill for the most part) or take a cab (probably around DKK 120-150).

Alternatively, if you really want to try your luck, be bold and give us a call. If we have availability we might be able to pick you up in the city centre, but please don’t be disappointed in case we have our hands tied at that moment.

The road network in the Faroe Islands is of high quality, safe, and comfortable, but some of the roads and tunnels leading to smaller villages can be narrow. To ensure safety, it’s best to keep a moderate pace on these stretches.

You are required to keep the lights on when driving at all times, even during day.

The speed limit in cities and villages is 50 kilometers per hour, while it’s 80 kilometers per hour when driving between them. Please adhere to these limits.

When driving in the Faroe Islands, be aware of sheep on the road. These animals roam freely on the islands and frequently walk onto the roads. It’s common to see sheep on or close to the road, so be sure to reduce your speed when approaching them.

Please read our blog post on driving in the Faroe Islands for more information and watch this short video on YouTube which provides a brief guideline for safe driving in the Faroe Islands.

The Camper Vans

We offer both manual and automatic transmission vans, but as a small operator with a limited fleet, the availability of your preferred camper van will depend on the timing of your rental request.

Please do not book manual transmission if you lack the experience. Rather, reach out to us by email on info@campervans.fo and we will see if there is anything we can do.

Our camper vans do not have toilets or showers, but there are ample restroom and shower facilities available throughout the islands. You can find more information on this by scrolling up this FAQ list.

Our camper vans come stocked with most essentials for your comfort. Additionally, you can add on any extra “nice-to-have” items to your booking. Find out more about what’s included and what be purchased as add-ons here.

In addition to your driver license (obviously), we recommend reading this blog post from our sister company  Experience Faroe Islands for a complete checklist on what to bring on your trip.

All of our camper vans (except for the Compact Manual model) come equipped with independent heating systems that operate without the need for the vehicle’s engine to be running. This ensures you’ll stay cozy and warm throughout the night or after spending a day adventuring in the great outdoors.

The Premium and Medium vans sleep up to 3 people while the Compact van sleeps 2 people. Check the camper vans in more detail here.

Some of our vans run on unleaded petrol and others on Diesel. We will give you these instructions at pick-up and the type of fuel will also be clearly indicated on the fuel door.

If you encounter any mechanical issues with your camper van, please contact us immediately to report the situation. Our priority is to get you back on the road as soon as possible. However, in the event the vehicle can’t be fixed in time, we will make every effort to find another available vehicle. Alternatively, we will work with you to secure suitable accommodations and refund the rental fee for the affected period.
